4 Weeks After Treatment

In a couple of days it will be the one month mark after radiation. Taste is just now starting to come back to where certain things like fruit and berry flavors are strong. I realize I was a little too eager thinking that I would have taste back in a few weeks. Even now taste is starting to be like 90% of what it was. There is still just that little bit of flavor missing. I tried spaghetti and it tasted like spaghetti, but it didn’t taste like I remember it being. Garlic bread with the spaghetti though wasn’t happening for me. I’ve tried butter on toast throughout treatment, and I just can’t taste butter at all. I remember how it should taste, but now it’s just this watery goo on bread.

Coffee is back! This is what I looked forward to all through treatment. Ok, so here is the deal though, in case I get any other radiation people’s hopes up. Coffee still burns my tongue a little bit and leaves it tingling, but the flavor is all there. The pumpkin spice creamer comes through just fine. Burning tongue is a small price to pay at this point. Danielle picked me up a gift card to Starbucks and that’s where I’m headed today before work!

It’s weird how the pumpkin spice creamer flavor works, but pumpkin pie still has a dull taste to it-Probably something to do with preservatives, but who knows. I’ve tried fast food too; burgers seem to taste like burgers, but French fries taste strange. The texture is like a French fry, but I think I just taste a square stick of grease. The next thing I am going to try is pizza. I’m trying to hold off till I know my taste buds are back all the way, because I want pizza so bad and want it to be worth it! I want it to taste like the pizza I remember. In New York all I could taste on the pizza was the crust. No one should have to taste pizza like that.
